Общественная организация «Федерация баскетбола Иркутской области» была основана в 2002 году в целях развития баскетбола в Иркутской области, повышения его роли во всестороннем гармоничном развитии личности, формирования здорового образа жизни, привлечения населения к регулярным занятиям баскетболом.
Федерация выполняет следующие виды деятельности: разрабатывает и реализует планы развития баскетбола в Иркутской области, организует мероприятия по пропаганде и популяризации баскетбола, организует и проводит соревнования среди различных слоев населения.
06 июня 2003 года «Федерация баскетбола Иркутской области» принята в члены Общероссийской Общественной Организации «Российская Федерация баскетбола».
Распоряжением министерства по физической культуре, спорту и молодежной политике Иркутской области от 4 мая 2010 года № 234, принято решение о государственной аккредитации общественной организации «Федерация баскетбола Иркутской области» по виду спорта – баскетбол.
